Saxon Phonics

Our Phonics Program

This is the third year that our kindergarten program has used Saxon Phonics.  Through this program, our students develop phonemic awareness, letter and letter sound recognition, and sight word recognition.

Things to Know About Saxon

  • Each week there are four lessons focusing on a letter.
  • The sequence is: l, o, g, h, t, p, a, n, m, i, s, f, r, k, b, u, z, c, e, y, d, v, j, x, w, qu
  • We study a letter Monday - Thursday and on Fridays I give the students an assessment.
  • Each day your child will bring home a worksheet that we have completed in class related to the letter.
  • After we have studied four or five letters, we use those letters to build words to sound out.  For example l, o, g, h, t, - log, hog, tot, hot, lot, got...
  • Once we begin building words, I send home a word list (on Mondays) of words for my students to sound out.  It is called the Word List Sheet.  When your child brings it home, please help your child as he/she practices sounding out the word.  We will go over them in class, but your child will need follow-up practice.
The Saxon Phonics Program is successful because it continually reviews previously taught concepts as it teaches new concepts.  Your child will learn about consonants, vowels, phonics rules, compound words, syllables, digraphs, letter combinations, and twin consonants.

We have enjoyed using Saxon Phonics in my classroom, it provides opportunities for each student no matter what their previous background knowledge has been.
